Starting Your Own Tutoring Business
How to start a tutoring service
Starting your own tutoring business is a challenging and rewarding home business income opportunity. There is a growing demand for tutoring and tutor jobs are available
in many subjects from Math to English tutors, reading tutors and homework tutors. These are the details you need to decide on when you start a tutoring service.
What do I need to start a tutoring business from home?
- A tutoring business requires very little start up money and is low cost to run. When starting your own tutoring business make sure you don't spend money on
stuff you don't need. It is tempting to buy text books and teaching aids but usually these are not necessary. Generally students use their
own text books and teaching aids are usually only necessary in certain situations. You will need to spend some money intially to advertise your tutoring
business and get tutoring jobs.
- Although there are no special licensing requirements to become a tutor it is advisable to have proof of your credentials available to show potential clients. Copies of certificates, qualifications and proof of any training can be presented
to clients. Include letters of recommendation that confirm your abilities as a tutor as well as your good character. Include reference contact numbers
for the clients to follow up if they want.
- Create a comprehensive and current resume. Define the subject areas and level you want to focus your tutoring service on. Make a list
of all your relevant experience, training and qualifications. Your resume can be an excellent marketing tool for your tutoring business.
- While you do not need a license to be a tutor you may need a business license or permit to operate a small or home based business.
Go to Small Business Licenses to find out more. Joining a professional organization such as the National Tutoring Association provides good support and resources
when starting a tutoring service.
What services will I offer
- Decide which subjects you are able to tutor. Consider how you will show prospective clients that you are qualified to provide tutoring
in these subjects. In general Math tutors are in the highest demand followed by Science. However there are many opportunities for jobs tutoring
English and reading, tutoring a foreign language and for helping students with homework and test preparation. It isn't necessary to have a college degree in the subject you tutor as long as you are sufficiently proficient in it. However a college degree
does add to your credibility.
- What grade levels do you want to tutor? This can range from elementary level to college. Middle and high school tutoring appears to
be the most in demand as often parents can help a child with elementary subjects themselves. However busy parents will hire tutors to help with homework.
You need an appropriate level of academic knowledge for the students you are tutoring.
- Will you offer one-to-one tutoring or do you prefer to tutor small groups of students? This will also be determined by the venue you
use for tutoring. How long will each tutoring session be? Typically sesions are either a half hour or an hour long. This is usually based on both the
preferences of the client and the tutor but the age and attention span of the student needs to be taken into consideration.
Where and how will I get tutoring jobs?
- Consider who your possible clients are. What age group and grade do you want to tutor? How far are you prepared to travel to tutor
in a client's home? What is a reasonable radius from your home for students to come to your house to be tutored? This will be your target market when starting your own tutoring business.
- Will you travel to clients' homes or will students come to your home? Usually it is more convenient for the student to come to your home
but when starting your own tutoring business it provides a competitive advantage if you are willing to travel to their homes.
You should consider whether your home can provide a quiet learning environment with minimum distractions. Having kids running around and making a noise
while you are trying to tutor a student will severly compromise your service.
- If neither your home or the client's house is a good option then think about using the study rooms at the local library or a nearby community center for tutoring.
Always take into consideration travel times between appointments adn how many tutoring sessions you can realistically accommodate in one day. Also factor any gas and car expenses
into your rates.
What will I charge for my tutoring services?
- You need to set your rates. This requires some market research in your area and will depend on
your location, the level and subject you are tutoring and the number of students in your tutor group. Go to
Pricing your tutoring service to find out more.
