How to Start a Business from Home
What licenses and permits do I need when starting a home business?
When you start a business from home it is important to know what laws and regulations apply to your particular home business. Keep your home business
legitimate and put the proper licensing and permits in place.
- Local Business Licenses
A local business license is based on the city, state and county where you operate your business and each of these will
have different requirements for licenses depending on the type of small business you operate from your home. Find out
About a Small Business License.
- Home Occupation Permit
Before you start a home based business check your local zoning laws
to determine if your neighborhood permits a business in the home.
Many city and county zoning agencies require all home businesses to get a Home Occupation Permit. You will need to find out the zoning regulations for your area
by contacting your City Hall or local Planning Department. Common zoning restrictions for conducting business activities from your home include
prohibitions about signage, the number of customers visiting your home and parking and commercial vehicle restrictions.
- Health and Safety Permit
If your home based business involves preparing food you probably need to get a health permit.
Call your city of county health department to find out the requirements for you to start a business from home. Child care services at home also require certain health and safety permits.
- Sellers Permit or Sales Tax License
If you are buying wholesale merchandise for resale your state may require you to
register for a seller's permit or sales tax permit. This license permits and requires the
collection of sales tax from customers. Not every home business needs a Sales Tax License or Permit. Your State Franchise Tax Board will
provide you with the details or go to www.irs.gov
If you are unsure of which permits and licenses you need to start a business from home you can contact the Small Business Administration, your local
chamber of commerce, your city hall or city or county clerk, or go to
www.business.gov to find out.
Follow the proper steps to starting a home business and set yourself up for success.
