Where can medical billers and coders get accredited?
Medical billing and coding certification will give your medical billing career or business a big advantage. Most employers prefer to
contract or employ medical billers and coders who are certified by a recognized agency.
These are some of the recognized certifying agencies for medical coders.
- The American Health Information Management Association AHIMA offers a number of credentials including
Certified Coding Associate (Entry Level), Certified Coding Specialist and Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Based. To obtain certification the medical coder must pass

- The American Academy of Professional Coders The AAPC also offers a list of different
credentials including their gold standard Certified Professional Coder. As with AHIMA there are several levels of certification.

- The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists PAHCS requires at least two years experience
and current employment as a medical coder to be eligible for certification. Active membership of PAHCS is also required.
- The Board of Medical Speciality Coding They offer coding certifications in many specialities
from cardiology to urology. Certification is achieved through a skill-based,"open-book" written exam.
Medical billers process and submit medical claims to insurance companies and, in some instances, patients. There are no mandatory requirements for certification to work as a medical biller but
it will certainly improve both your employment and earning prospects. Medical billing certification can be achieved through these recognized agencies
- The American Medical Billing Association AMBA offers the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist certification. The medical biller is
required to pass an exam developed specifically for the medical billing professional.
- The Healthcare Billing and Management Association HBMA offers certification to its members.

- Medical Association of Billers This organization offers the Certified Medical Billing Specialist certification.
This is described as an introductory level billing and coding exam with no classroom prerequisites needed to sit the exam.
An intermediate level certification is also offered.
Most certifications need to be renewed on a regular basis.
