How to create a flyer in Microsoft Word

make a flyer

Make a flyer to advertise your home business.

An affordable and effective way to promote your product or services, flyers get you customers. Follow these easy steps to design and print a flyer using your home computer.

  • Plan your flyer Begin by designing and planning your flyer on a sheet of paper. Decide on an eye catching headline, your images, your text and your layout. For help with this go to Create a Flyer. Decide on the color paper you will print your flyers on, as this will impact on your choice of border, font etc when you make a flyer.
  • Open a new document in MS Word Start by opening a new document and saving it with an appropriate title heading. Go to File - New - Blank Word Document in the file menu.
  • Design the flyer border You want something that draws immediate attention to your flyer. To create a page border go to Border - Borders and Shading from the Format menu for MS Word 2003 or earlier versions or if you are using MS Word 2007 go to the Paragraph section of the Home tab and click on the Border dropdown, then click on Borders and Shading. In both versions click the Page Border tab. Click the dropdown menu in the Art box and select the border design you want for your flyer. Adjust the width and color to match your flyer design by clicking the dropdowns under Color and Width.
  • Create your Headline Place your catchy headline inside a banner at the top of your flyer. Select an eye catching font. In MS Word 2007 click on the Insert tab and click on the Shapes dropdown. In MS Word 2003 select Pictures from the Insert menu and select Autoshapes. Choose and click on an appropriate shape. Right click on the shape and adjust the position and size. Right click on the shape again and select Add Text. Select an attention-grabbing but easy to read font and type in your headline.
  • Insert your image or graphic When you make a flyer you can decide to have a central image immediately following the headline or you can insert a text box and then your image. Whatever your layout the image should be centered in the top half of the page. A single large image is proven to make a stronger impression than numerous small images. Select Image from the Insert dropdown menu. Your image should be saved in your Files. A good quality image is very important. If you do not have your own picture you can purchase a stock image from the internet. Dreamstime and istockphoto are two of a number of sites that sell images from a dollar upwards. You will only need to purchase a small size and then use Picture Manager or a similar program to resize it for your flyer. Save the resized image in your files so you can access it for your flyer.
  • Insert a text box Select Text Box from the Insert menu. Stick wih a simple font that is easy to read and keep the text short and to the point. You want to get your basic message across while keeping the reader's interest. Center you text. You can include your Call to Action statement and contact details in this box or insert another text box. Find out more about how to write powerful headlines and text at How to Make a Flyer.
  • Check it and recheck it Select Print Preview from the File menu and preview your flyer. Proofread it a number of times before printing your flyer. Ask someone else to check it for you. Save the flyer in Word Document format to make printed versions. For Web versions select Save as Web File or HTML.
A well designed flyer will attract a reader's attention and interest. When you make a flyer use both compelling imagery and the right text to get your message across.
