Here are the step by step guidelines to use when working out the right price for selling your greeting cards.

Work out your costs

These are the areas you need to consider when working out your greeting card costs.

  • Cost of card making tools. You need to include the cost of the card making tools and equipment you bought when starting your greeting card home business. Items such as cutting tools, paper trimmers, rubber stamps, printer should be amortized over a period by including a small percentage in the price of each greeeting card. For example, if your tools cost you $200 and you would like to write it off (amortize) over a period of 2 years then you need to cost in an amount of $8.33 per month.
  • Cost of card making supplies. Work out the cost of the supplies used to make a particular card. Include all the materials used in creating the greeting card from paper to embellishments, glue, envelope and packaging.
  • Cost of labor. The cost of the time put into the greeting card is very important in getting to the right price. With a greeting card home business as with any home business you need to be properly remunerated for your time and labor. Include the time taken to design the cards, source the supplies, make the cards, market and sell the cards and any related administration time.
  • Cost of business overheads. This includes any related transport cots, related phone and internet charges and any other business running costs incurred in making the greeting card. Also include any advertising costs such as business cards, brochures, adverts.

Work out your selling price.

When determining the sort of profit you want to make on your greeting cards it is important to consider the following

  • Your target market. You have to look at the people who are the potential customers for your greeting card home business. What sort of income group do they fall into? What would they be likely to spend on a handmade greeting card?
  • Your competition. Look at the area in which you are selling the greeting cards. What is the average price for a similar product? You need to be competitive without underselling yourself. If your prices are too low the greeting card may be perceived to be of inferior quality. If your price is too high it will not be considered value for money.
If your target market and competition indicate that your prices may be too high then look at adjusting your designs and material used. There is no point in making greeting cards that are too expensive for your particular market. Alternatively you may try and find another market where higher prices are acceptable.

Correctly pricing your greeting cards is key to the success of a greeting card home business. Proper pricing provides the foundation for your profits.
