Use these expert guidelines for your promotional flyer design.
- Create a powerful headline What is the primary reason for the flyer? Write an eye catching heading that
promotes this. Use a few, no more than five, carefully chosen words that grab the reader's attention. It should fit in one line across the page
for maximum effect. Popular words that get the reader's interest include Easy, How To,
Now You Can, Proven, Discover, Save, Results, Fast, Excellent, Guaranteed, Helpful, Convenient, Powerful, Unique, Exclusive, Complete, Quality, Genuine, Superior
and Special. Make your title in bigger text and highlight it in bold but avoid using all capitals as they are more difficult to read.
- Select your graphics A single large picture is more effective than a number of smaller images
as it immediately draws the reader in. The image should tell the story of your business straight away. It should be centered in the top half of
the page to create a visual focus to the flyer. A reader's eyes are natually drawn to the top half
of a page. Use a good quality, high resolution image. For a professional looking flyer your image should be at least 300 dpi (dots per inch)
to print clearly with proper sharpness. You can scan your own images or buy high resolution, royalty free stock images from internet
stock image sites.
- What are the benefits of your business for the reader? The reader is only interested in What's in it for
me? Put yourself in their shoes and create a flyer from their perspective. Write your message in terms of "You" rather than "I" or "We".
Convince the reader how the benefits of your product or service meet their needs. Make
your text short and to the point. Bullet points work well as the human eye is naturally drawn to bulleted areas and they provide data in an
easy-to-read format. Make sure to include the crucial facts - who, what, where, when, why etc. Keep it real and avoid making unbelievable claims about your product or service.

- Add in references and testimonials Glowing endorsments about your services or product from
happy customers are always a valuable selling tool. Include the full name of the person providing the testimonial.
- Include a "Call to Action" statement Motivate the reader to take action with statements such as "Call Today",
"Order it Now", "Don't Delay" and "Take Advantage". You can boldface your call to action statement to catch the eye.
- List your contact information Include your first name and at least two ways of contacting you such as a phone number and
email.
- Keep it simple When you create a flyer keep your layout simple. Limit yourself to two
typefaces to prevent visual confusion. It is best to use one font for your headlines and another for the body copy. The suggested font size
for your text is between 10 and 12 points and a good rule of thumb is to set your headline text two or three points higher than the body text.
You can use bold variations and italics within the font for quotes, captions etc. People read English from left to right so don't create confusion by inserting irregular shaped boxes of text.
- Triple check it and check it again You can't proofread it too many times before you print
your flyer. Check all the details particularly your contact details.
